Himachal BJP offers Rs 20 lakh incentive for unopposed panchayats

In a statement issued on Thursday, Thakur said the initiative aims to encourage consensus-based democracy and accelerate rural development. He stated that Rs 10 lakh would be provided from his Local Area Development Fund (LADF), while another Rs 10 lakh would be contributed from the LADF of Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur.

Appealing to candidates contesting the elections, Thakur urged them to ensure unopposed polls in villages so that the additional funds could be utilised for strengthening rural infrastructure and public welfare projects.

Targeting the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP MLA alleged that the pace of rural development had slowed considerably during the last three-and-a-half years. He claimed that Panchayati Raj institutions were facing a severe financial crisis and asserted that gram panchayats were surviving largely on centrally sponsored schemes due to the state government’s failure to release adequate development funds.

Thakur said the BJP remained committed to strengthening the Panchayati Raj system and empowering rural bodies. Referring to the Centre’s “VP Jeeramji” scheme, he said the programme would help boost the rural economy by increasing guaranteed employment days from 100 to 125 annually.

He said panchayats would receive adequate financial support under the 16th Finance Commission, while eligible beneficiaries would get pucca houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.
