High-velocity winds and heavy rain wreak havoc in Himachals Palampur, Baijnath regions

Several areas of the Baijnath subdivision, including Paprola and Chhota Bhanghal, suffered extensive damage as strong winds and heavy rainfall lashed the region for several hours. The storm uprooted hundreds of trees, damaged rooftops, boundary walls and electric infrastructure, while many roads were blocked due to fallen trees and debris.

The weather impacted electricity supply in the region. Power lines and electric poles were damaged after trees and branches fell on transmission lines, resulting in prolonged outages in many parts of Palampur and Baijnath subdivisions. Residents in several localities spent the entire night and most of Monday without electricity.

Officials of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board said repair teams were deployed on a war footing to restore power supply in the affected areas. However, restoration work was hampered in some rural locations due to continuous rain and blocked roads.

The storm also caused heavy damage to vehicles and buildings. Several parked vehicles were crushed under uprooted trees, while houses and shops suffered structural damage after heavy branches and debris fell on rooftops. In many places, traffic movement was disrupted for hours due to blocked roads.

Strong winds and rain also affected communication networks and damaged standing crops and horticulture produce in rural areas, raising concerns among farmers about possible financial losses.

Meanwhile, the death of an Electricity Board lineman during restoration work cast a shadow over the rescue and repair operations. The employee, a resident of Rantital, was electrocuted in the Bindravan area while repairing damaged electricity lines. Sources alleged that the power supply was suddenly restored during the repair work, leading to the fatal accident.

O P Yadav said that no loss of life had been reported in the region so far except for the death of the lineman engaged in restoration work. He said electricity supply had been restored in Palampur town, though several rural areas were still without power.

The administration, municipal authorities, and Electricity Board employees continued restoration and relief operations throughout the day. The Meteorological Department has advised residents to remain cautious as more spells of rain and gusty winds are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next few days.
