Heavy rain, hailstorm batters Himachal Pradesh

As per the State’s Meteorological Department, snowfall and rainfall will continue to occur across the state in the next few days with intense showers on May 3 and 4, for which a yellow warning has been issued.

During this period, minimum temperatures are very likely to fall by 2°C to 3°C wile maximum temperatures are very likely to fall by 2°C to 5°C.

Meanwhile, the state on Thursday witnessed significant rainfall along with hailstorm. Shimla, the state’s capital witnessed 15 mm rain along with a spell of hailstorm throughout the day.

As a result, traffic movement in the town was also affected for few hours due to low visibility, causing inconveniences to the people, especially school students and office goers.

Hailstorm was also witnessed in upper regions of Shimla districts, including Kufri, Theog Fagu, Jubbal and Kotkhai, causing significant damage to apples, stone fruits and vegetables in the region.

As a result of a significant precipitation, maximum temperatures dropped by 2°C to 9°C, ranging between 17°C to 33°C, while no large change was witnessed in minimum temperatures as they remained between 2°C to 24°C.

Maximum temperature in Shimla was 21.2°C, Dharamsala 29°C, Manali 16.8°C, Kangra 31.6°C, Mandi 29.8°C, Solan 28°C, Sundernagar 30.5°C, Nahan 30.4°C, Bhuntar 23.4°C and Kalpa 16.5°C.

With 33.4°C minimum temperatures, Una was the hottest place in the state while Tabo in Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest as it recorded 2.4°C minimum temperature.

In April, the state witnessed a one percent rainfall surplus as the state received 64.9 mm rain as compared to 64 mm which is considered normal in April.

Out of all the districts, Bilaspur recorded the highest surplus rain as it witnessed 77.5 mm rain against 26.7 mm normal, taking total rain surplus to 190 per cent. Solan recorded 87.3 mm against 33.1 mm, witnessing 164 per cent surplus rain.

Out of all the districts, only Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba and Lahaul and Spiti witnessed rainfall deficit as these districts witnessed below average rainfall.

The highest rainfall deficit was minus 45 per cent, which was recorded in Kinnaur as it received 43.3 as compared to 76.3 mm normal. Lahaul and Spiti witnessed minus 37 per cent deficit, Chamba minus 21 and Kullu minus 9 per cent.
