For this, The Himkara Unnayan Samiti, under the Himachal Pradesh Department of Prisons and Correctional Services, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Flipkart.
The department has plans for selling products made by inmates on online platforms for which efforts were being made.
Till now the products were being sold via offline mode besides being sold and showcased at various sales cum exhibitions organised by the department.
Speaking about the MoU, Abhishek Trivedi, Director General of Prison and Correctional Services said, “This initiative is a significant step by the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services towards bringing positive change in the lives of prisoners and helping them become self-reliant and responsible members of society.”
“Support will also be provided for packaging, branding and logistics, so that the products meet market standards and remain competitive. Prisoners will also be given training in line with current market needs, so they can develop new skills and find better self-employment opportunities after their release” he said.
The DG also said, “Himachal Pradesh’s jails currently house around 3,000 inmates, of whom 1,000 are convicted prisoners and 2,000 are undertrials.”
The income earned from these online sales will go directly to the prisoners, helping improve their financial situation and quality of life. “This initiative will also support their reintegration into society” he added.
On this occasion, the 12th meeting of the Himkara Unnayan Samiti and the 20th meeting of the Prisoners Welfare Fund were also held, attended by officers and staff nominated from all jails across the state.
During the event, Trivedi also presented the DG’s disc award to the following staff members of Sub Jail, Nalagarh, for their courage and outstanding work.
The awardees included Nishant Kumar (Assistant Superintendent of Jail), warder Sikandar Gathania, warder Kamal Kumar, warder Prince Rana, warder Rishabh Chauhan and warder Aman Kumar.
