The event brought together members of the judiciary, legal fraternity, government departments, social organisations and members of the public to strengthen awareness about legal rights and ensure access to justice for all sections of society.
The programme was organised by the Himachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority (HPLSA), the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kangra, and various social organisations. Supreme Court Judge and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), Justice Vikram Nath, attended the event as the chief guest. Senior judicial officers, representatives of legal services institutions and members of the Bar also participated in the camp.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Vikram Nath emphasised that citizens should not only be aware of their fundamental rights but also discharge their fundamental duties. He said the Constitution envisions the creation of a strong, capable and harmonious society and that every citizen has a role in realising that vision.
Referring to the unique geographical challenges of Himachal, he said people living in remote and mountainous areas often have to travel long distances to access legal remedies. In such circumstances, the objective of legal services authorities is to ensure that justice reaches the people rather than requiring people to travel in search of justice.
Justice Nath also stressed the importance of environmental conservation and balanced development. He said protecting nature is a collective responsibility and urged citizens to contribute towards preserving the environment.
Highlighting the growing influence of social media, he said freedom of expression must be exercised responsibly and with due regard for the dignity and rights of others.
Justice N Kotiswar Singh said fundamental rights should not remain confined to the pages of the Constitution but must be translated into reality. He observed that many people are deprived of justice because they lack awareness about their legal rights and the remedies available to them.
Justice Sanjay Karol said social justice remains one of the foremost objectives of the legal system. He assured participants that the judiciary is continuously striving to ensure that justice reaches every citizen, particularly those belonging to vulnerable and marginalised sections of society.
Chief Justice of the Himachal High Court and Patron-in-Chief of the Himachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority, Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia, Executive Chairman of HPLSA Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, Justice Sandeep Sharma and DLSA Chairman Chirag Bhanu Singh also addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of legal literacy in building an informed and empowered society.
During the programme, 11 legal service vehicles were flagged off to extend legal awareness and assistance to remote areas of the district.
The organisers said the camp was aimed at strengthening public awareness about legal rights and improving access to free legal services, particularly for disadvantaged sections of society. The event was supported by the Dharamsala Bar Association.
