Forest Dept marks Environment Day with awareness-cum-cleanliness drive in Dharamsala

The initiative aimed to educate tourists, trekkers, hikers and nature guides about Himachal Pradesh’s rich natural heritage and the importance of preserving its fragile mountain ecosystems.

Triund was selected as the venue to sensitise visitors to the ecological significance of the region’s high-altitude forests and biodiversity. Participants were introduced to prominent tree and plant species, including Deodar, Buransh (Rhododendron) and Oak, and were informed about their ecological value and traditional uses.

The programme also featured bird identification and awareness sessions, highlighting the role of birds in maintaining ecological balance. Discussions on bird migration patterns provided participants with a deeper understanding of wildlife conservation and the need to protect natural habitats.

Three key activities were conducted during the event: a plastic waste collection and cleanliness drive, birdwatching and awareness sessions, and plant identification exercises. A workshop for stakeholders, including hoteliers, trekkers, hikers, nature guides and forest personnel, focused on promoting sustainable eco-tourism and conserving the region’s flora and fauna.

Conservator Basu Kaushal stressed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in safeguarding the environment and preserving natural resources for future generations. Among those present were noted vulture conservationist Malayshri Bhattacharya, DFO (HQ) Rahul Sharma and Forest Corporation Divisional Manager Ambrish Sharma.
