He said that the Gobind Sagar Reservoir had recorded a fish production of 191.22 MT in 2023-24, which substantially increased to 347.56 MT in 2024-25 and further to 404 MT in 2025-26, an increase of 56.44 MT over the previous financial year and an overall increase of 212.78 MT in the past two years alone.
Chandel said that the success in fish production in the Gobind Sagar Reservoir was attributed to the implementation of fish seed stocking programmes, as per the recommendations of the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore, Kolkata. It was also the result of the concerted efforts of the department in enforcing a very strict fishing in a restricted period, he added.
He said that the Fisheries Department also emphasised on the effective conservation of Golden Mahseer in the Gobind Sagar Reservoir and the Pong Dam, through captive breeding and subsequent stocking of Mahseer juveniles. He added that over 6,000 fishermen were engaged in fishing in five major reservoirs — Gobind Sagar, Pong Dam, Chamera, Kol Dam and Ranjit Sagar, having a combined water spread area of around 43,785 hectares, to earn their livelihood.
Chandel said that major species such as Silver Carp, Rohu, Catla, Mrigal, Common Carp, Mahseer Grass Carp and cat fish Singhara were produced in the state.
