Creation of fire lines, controlled burning on 450 hectares planned to save forests during summer

The department has also deployed 115 Van Mitras to assist the field staff to combat fires. The department has cautioned miscreants and offenders against igniting fires in forests and warned of legal action against anyone found involved in this illegal activity.

There are five forest ranges—Nurpur, Kotla, Jawali, Indora and Rey— comprising 82 beats in Nurpur division having 4,153.84 hectares of reserved forest area, 5810.37 hectares of demarcated protected forest and 26,007.23 hectares of undemarcated protected forest area. Of the total forest covered area, the 65 per cent area has been identified as sensitive to fire while around 41,000 hectares of forest having chir trees is considered to be highly susceptible to fire. A dedicated control room in the forest divisional office at Nurpur with wireless systems has been set up and the leave of the field staff are cancelled during the fire season.

According to Sandeep Kohli, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Nurpur, the department has deployed five trained firefighting task force teams in all five forest ranges and kept a reserve task force team at the division level as a back-up plan. Kohli said that the modern firefighting equipment such as drone cameras, specialised fire-resistant clothing and improved tools were being provided to the field staff to combat forest fires during the summer days.

He said, “The department has also planned to sensitise locals and passers-by on how to prevent fires, which are often caused by cleaning forest floors for livestock grazing. Besides, a formal integration between the NDRF, Forest department and local gram panchayats has been established.”
