Conservation, digitisation of manuscripts deliberated upon

The primary objective of the workshop was to promote the study and preservation of manuscript traditions and scripts prevalent in the Western Himalayan region, particularly in Himachal Pradesh. Scripts like Pabuchi, Tankri, Pandavani and Chandvani, which had evolved from the Sharada script were discussed. Scholars and experts delivered lectures on the technical aspects of manuscript conservation, historical evolution of scripts, methods of reading manuscripts and regional traditions. Discussions and interactive sessions were also held on key issues related to the subject.

Eminent scholars highlighted the relevance of the theme, importance of manuscripts and the urgent need for their preservation. Chief guest Kavar Singh Sharma described ancient scripts and manuscripts as the foundation of Indian knowledge tradition and stressed the need to strengthen efforts for their preservation and study at both institutional and individual levels. Prof Uma C Vaidya highlighted the technical and practical aspects of manuscript conservation and underscored the need for continuous research and training in the field. She described the workshop as a significant initiative towards strengthening awareness and academic dialogue on the subject.
