Both the Congress and the BJP have stepped up efforts to secure the support of newly elected BDC members ahead of the elections for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.
Although the Panchayati Raj elections were contested on a non-party basis, political parties have begun staking claim to the allegiance of victorious candidates and are engaged in behind-the-scenes negotiations to secure majorities in the three BDCs. Political observers view the developments as an important test of grassroots political strength for both parties.
The contest is particularly significant in Bhawarna and Sulah blocks, where the posts of BDC Chairperson have been reserved for women belonging to the general category. The reservation has altered political equations and prompted both parties to recalibrate their strategies.
The newly constituted Palampur Block is also witnessing heightened political activity, as elections for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson will be held there for the first time. Leaders from both parties are actively reaching out to elected members in an effort to consolidate support ahead of the voting process.
Congress leaders have expressed confidence of securing control of the BDCs. Sanjay Singh Chauhan claimed that Congress-backed candidates had won a majority of seats in Bhawarna and Sulah blocks and said the party was well placed to capture both the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson posts.
The BJP, however, has also asserted its claim over the local bodies. Vipin Singh Parmar said the party had received overwhelming support from voters across all levels, from panchayats to the Zila Parishad. He maintained that a large number of elected BDC members were committed to the BJP’s ideology and expressed confidence that the party would succeed in securing key positions.
With both parties determined to establish dominance at the grassroots level, the forthcoming BDC elections are expected to witness intense political competition.
Political observers believe the outcome will not only determine control over local development bodies but may also offer an early indication of political trends ahead of the 2027 Himachal Assembly elections.
