As part of its strategy to strengthen grassroots campaigning, the party has deputed six ministers, chairpersons of various boards and corporations and as many as 16 legislators to oversee electioneering activities at the ward level. Senior leaders have been assigned responsibilities relating to booth management, voter outreach and coordination of local campaign teams.
According to party sources, Rajesh Dharmani has been appointed in-charge of the Palampur Municipal Corporation elections, while Bhawani Singh Pathania and Sanjay Rattan have been named co-in-charges.
Similar arrangements have been made for the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation elections, with ministers and legislators being allocated specific wards and regions to supervise campaign activities.
Senior minister Chander Kumar has been appointed senior observer for the Dharamsala Municipal Corporation elections, while MLA Kishori Lal has been entrusted with organisational responsibilities in the constituency.
The party leadership is also expected to hold a series of meetings with local workers and office-bearers in the coming days to strengthen coordination and mobilise support at the grassroots level.
The Congress leadership is aiming to consolidate its organisational network ahead of the elections, which are being viewed as an important political test for the ruling party in the state. Party leaders have already started interacting with local units and reviewing poll preparedness in different urban bodies.
Meanwhile, the scrutiny process for nominations in the urban local body elections has been completed. A total of 1,394 candidates remain in the fray for elections to 51 urban local bodies across Himachal Pradesh after 32 nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny. Election officials said the nomination process witnessed enthusiastic participation across districts, though a few local bodies also recorded unopposed victories.
The civic body elections are expected to witness intense campaigning by both the Congress and the BJP, with issues such as local governance, urban infrastructure, sanitation, water supply, parking facilities and civic amenities likely to dominate the poll narrative.
Political observers believe that the outcome of these elections could significantly influence the political atmosphere in the state ahead of future electoral contests.
