The elections are being viewed as politically significant for both the ruling Congress and the BJP, particularly in Kangra district where urban local body elections have traditionally witnessed keen contests between the two parties. Although elections to MCs and nagar panchayats are officially conducted on a non-party basis and without party symbols, both the Congress and BJP actively campaigned in support of their respective candidates.
According to official figures, the three urban local bodies together recorded over 74 per cent polling.
Kangra MC recorded a voter turnout of 75.47 per cent. Out of 7,823 registered voters, 5,904 cast their votes, including 2,944 men and 2,960 women.
Nagrota Bagwan MC registered 73.44 per cent polling. Of the 4,719 eligible voters, 3,466 exercised their franchise, including 1,728 men and 1,738 women. Officials said polling remained steady across all seven wards of the council.
Shahpur nagar panchayat recorded an impressive 75.24 per cent voter turnout. Of the total electorate of 4,290 voters, 3,228 cast their votes, including 1,557 men and 1,671 women.
