Students desirous of seeking admission to a school affiliated to the Himachal board were in a dilemma in the absence of a notification issued by the state Education Department to run a coeducational institution on the premises of the old boys’ school.
Former MLA and Congress leader Ajay Mahajan had taken up the issue of retaining the boys’ senior secondary school under the Himachal board as a coeducational facility with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Education Minister Rohit Thakur around two months ago. A notification merging the boys’ school with PM Shri BTC Girls GSSS, Nurpur, was issued on February 18. Mahajan had reportedly received a telephonic confirmation on April 10 regarding the acceptance of the demand in principle, along with an assurance that a notification would be issued soon.
Mahajan had announced the development as a major achievement. He says that he had again urged the Education Minister to ensure that the notification was issued before the model code of conduct comes into force ahead of the panchayati raj elections.
According to sources, the Education Department had shut and locked over 150-year-old boys’ school on April 1 after merging it with a CBSE-affiliated PM Shri BTC GSSS (Girls), Nurpur, as per a notification issued on February 18. The move had sparked widespread resentment among students and their parents, who wanted the continuation of the school under the Himachal board of education.
On April 9, former minister Rakesh Pathania had issued a 15-day ultimatum to the state government for the restoration of the school affiliated to the Himachal school board. Tanu Priya, officiating principal of GSSS (Boys), says that students seeking admission under the Himachal board have been visiting the school every day. “In the absence of a notification, formal admissions cannot be processed. Considering the notification will be issued and in view of the students’ demand, around 60 students have been provisionally enrolled in different classes without charging any admission fee,” she adds.
Kamlesh Kumari, Deputy Director Education, Dharamsala, says that no formal notification was received in her office till Tuesday.

However, the situation has now become complicated following the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct announced by the State Election Commission on Tuesday for the civic body elections scheduled for May 17. As a result, the state Education Department cannot issue the required notification until the completion of the election process.
