Broken irrigation channel pushes Salgran villagers towards agrarian distress

The villagers highlighted that the traditional irrigation system, locally known as a kuhl, was constructed a few years ago through community effort and personal expenditure to meet irrigation needs across their agricultural fields. Stretching nearly 800 metres from Kharon to Turi, the channel suffered extensive damage last year following a natural disaster. Despite timely reporting and repeated representations to the Jal Shakti Department, no repair work or interim irrigation arrangement has been undertaken so far.

In a formal representation submitted to Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, villagers stressed that the situation has reached a critical stage as the sowing and transplantation season approaches. Key crops such as cabbage and peas, which form the backbone of local agriculture, require a steady water supply during their initial growth phases.

Puram Chand, a local farmer, said the lack of irrigation could result in complete crop failure. “We are entering a crucial agricultural window. Without water, our crops will not survive, and this will lead to heavy financial losses,” he said.

Another resident, Devi Singh, underscored the wider socio-economic implications. He pointed out that the majority of families in Salgran are small and marginal farmers who depend entirely on agriculture for their livelihood. “This is not just about crops. It directly affects our ability to manage household expenses, including education and daily needs,” he said.

Villagers have urged the administration to treat the issue as an emergency and direct the Jal Shakti Department to arrange temporary irrigation facilities, such as a 60 mm pipeline, until permanent restoration is completed. They have also called for expediting the technical survey and approval process for rebuilding the damaged kuhl.

While the Sub-Divisional Officer of the Jal Shakti Department in Udaipur, Jasbir Singh Chandel, was unavailable for comment, Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana assured that the matter would be examined and necessary action taken.

The villagers remain hopeful of swift intervention to avert an impending livelihood crisis.
