BRO restores temporary connectivity on Lahaul route after landslide damage

The restoration comes days after heavy landslide debris and falling rocks extensively damaged the bridge, disrupting connectivity to 14 panchayats in Lahaul valley and the entire Pangi valley of Chamba district from Keylong and Manali. Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying tourists, had remained stranded on both sides of the route following the incident.

Officials said BRO teams worked continuously to create a temporary diversion through the stream bed and restore limited traffic movement. The route has now been opened temporarily for light vehicles, while work on a permanent road alignment and a new bridge is expected to begin shortly.

Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana confirmed the development and said the BRO had acted swiftly to restore connectivity in the region. She said permanent restoration work, including construction of a stable route and bridge, would be initiated soon.

The damaged route serves as a vital lifeline connecting Keylong and Manali with remote villages of Lahaul valley and Pangi valley through the SKTT road. The affected panchayats include Jahlma, Junda, Nalda, Mooring, Thirot, Kishori, Triloknath, Shakoli, Udaipur, Chimret, Tingret, Mangran, Salgran and Tindi.

Meanwhile, landslides also disrupted drinking water and irrigation infrastructure in nearby villages. Water supply pipelines to Jahlma village were damaged, causing hardship to residents, hotel owners and dhaba operators, who were forced to arrange water from neighbouring areas.

MLA Anuradha Rana said directions had been issued to the Jal Shakti Department to restore damaged drinking water and irrigation schemes. She added that the drinking water supply scheme had already been restored, bringing relief to villagers facing acute shortages.

However, restoration work on the damaged irrigation scheme is still underway. The irrigation canal serving Fuda village collapsed after the land beneath it shifted due to continuous sliding activity, affecting farming activities in the area.

Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana said the surrounding hillside remained vulnerable because of ongoing land movement and authorities were closely monitoring the situation. BRO and district administration teams were working in coordination to fully restore connectivity and essential services at the earliest.
