The BJP registered victories in the municipal councils of Mehatpur Basdehra and Santoshgarh, as well as in the nagar panchayats of Tahliwal and Gagret. Congress-backed candidates secured a majority only in Daulatpur Chowk nagar panchayat.
In Mehatpur Basdehra MC, the BJP won four seats, Congress secured three, while Independents emerged victorious on two seats. At Santoshgarh Municipal Council, the BJP won six seats against three won by Congress.
In Daulatpur Chowk nagar panchayat, Congress secured five seats while the BJP managed two. In Gagret nagar panchayat, the BJP won five seats and two seats went to Independent candidates, while Congress failed to open its account.
At Tahliwal nagar panchayat, located in Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri’s Assembly constituency, the BJP secured a comfortable majority with five seats compared to two won by Congress.
The two MCs of Mehatpur Basdehra and Santoshgarh fall within the Una Assembly constituency represented by BJP MLA Satpal Singh Satti.
Reacting to the results, Satti said the outcome reflected public dissatisfaction with the functioning of the ruling Congress government.
“The victories indicate people’s rejection of the ruling party. The public is fed up with the rule of mafias and stalled development works,” he said.
Satti further claimed that although the BJP officially won three seats in Mehatpur Basdehra in the seven-member house, the party also enjoys the support of the two Independent winners.
He said residents of Santoshgarh and Mehatpur Basdehra could now expect faster developmental works in their respective areas.
