“Elections were held in 51 urban local bodies in the state, including four municipal corporations. The Congress has won 29, while the BJP has won 21. So what’s the basis of the BJP’s claim of having won the ULB elections?” said Sukhu.
Incidentally, the MC elections were held on party symbols while the elections to municipal councils and nagar parishads weren’t. So, the results in the councils and parishads were followed by claims and counterclaims by both parties.
Taking a dig at Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, Sukhu said the BJP has won in Mandi Municipal Corporation because of MLA Anil Sharma, not Thakur.
“Thakur is trying to take credit for Sharma’s victory, who has considerable clout in Mandi. Why did the BJP lose Municipal Councils in district Mandi if Thakur can secure victory for the BJP?” asked Sukhu.
Firing another salvo at Thakur, Sukhu said the Rajeev Bindal group did much better than the Thakur group. “The Bindal group won Solan MC and Municipal Council as well,” Sukhu said.
The CM further said the MC victories were secured by the local MLAs – Anil Sharma won Mandi, Sudhir Sharma won Dharamsala and Ashish Butail won Palampur. The CM admitted that the party could not handle some issues properly in the Solan MC, where it was expecting a victory.
The Chief Minister further claimed that the Congress has won gram panchayat elections, winning the majority of the pradhan and vice pradhan posts. “In the Assembly elections, pradhans play a significant role. And the party has won most of the gram panchayats,” he claimed.
Meanwhile, counting of votes for zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections is underway. As these elections were not held on party symbols, claims and counterclaims by both parties are on the cards.
