Key Facts

Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) has announced plans to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 11 toll plazas along the Bengaluru-Pune highway (NH-48) on a pilot basis. The initiative aims to address range anxiety and promote EV adoption by providing affordable and fast charging infrastructure along a key inter-state corridor.

Details of the Plan

Bescom officials have conducted a detailed feasibility study for installing EV charging stations at toll plazas. The selected highway, NH-48, connects Bengaluru with Goa and Maharashtra, making it a strategic route for long-distance EV travel. Bescom is currently in talks with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to finalize the locations and permissions.

The charging stations will feature 120kW DC fast chargers, which can charge most modern EVs from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes. This rapid charging capability is expected to make long-distance EV travel more convenient and reduce the time spent at charging stops.

Affordable Pricing

One of the key attractions of Bescom's plan is the pricing. While private charging stations charge around ₹16 per unit, Bescom will offer electricity at just ₹7 per unit. This significant cost advantage is expected to encourage more EV owners to use the highway and reduce reliance on fossil fuel vehicles.

Officials attribute the success of the existing EV charging station at Kempegowda International Airport to its affordability, and they hope to replicate that success on the highway.

Impact on EV Adoption

Range anxiety remains a major barrier to EV adoption, especially for long-distance travel. By installing fast chargers at toll plazas, Bescom aims to alleviate this concern and make EVs a viable option for inter-city travel. The initiative could also serve as a model for other states looking to expand EV charging infrastructure along major highways.
