ASI suspended for kicking taxi driver in Shimla after dispute over roadside parking

The incident occurred near Tavi Mod in Shimla on Friday when the ASI, who was on duty during the President’s visit, instructed Ashish Kumar, a local taxi driver, to remove his vehicles parked on the roadside. However, Ashish told him that he could only remove one of his vehicles (a car or a bike) as he was alone there. This irritated the police officer, who then warned him of issuing a challan, leading to an argument between the two.

As the ASI proceeded to issue a challan, Ashish started recording a video on his mobile phone, alleging that the police officer was misbehaving with him. The situation escalated when he tried to remove the nameplate of the ASI, who then kicked him.

The video soon went viral on social media, prompting senior police officers to take cognisance of the matter. SSP, Shimla, Gaurav Singh said the action was taken after the incident of a police officer using excessive and unreasonable force against a person for not following traffic orders came to the notice of the district police.

He said, “The district police took the matter seriously and following its zero tolerance approach suspended the ASI with immediate effect. The action was taken to ensure a fair investigation.”
