According to police, cybercriminals are increasingly using fake KYC update messages, banking fraud calls, WhatsApp hacking, APK malware links, QR code scams, screen-sharing applications, fake investment platforms, social media impersonation and AI-based deep fake voice and video calls to target unsuspecting people.

Police have also mentioned that cybercriminals are now exploiting panic, fear and psychological pressure to manipulate victims.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and psychological manipulation have become the major tools of cyber criminals, which are being widely used by fraudsters to dupe people of their money.

“Fraudsters are using AI and psychological manipulation techniques to gain trust and deceive people. In several recent cases, even educated and digitally aware individuals have fallen victim to cyber fraud due to panic, haste or lack of verification. Smartphones today play a vital role in banking, education, healthcare, governance, communication and emergency services. However, blindly trusting unknown calls, suspicious links and unverified applications can expose users to serious cyber risks” said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Narveer Singh Rathour.

“Cyber safety is no longer merely a technical issue but a matter of public awareness, digital discipline and responsible smartphone usage” he added.

“The misuse of AI-based deepfake technology is also emerging as a serious threat. Fraudsters are creating fake voice and video messages impersonating relatives, senior officers or acquaintances to demand urgent money transfers” said the ASP.

Advising the people on how to use smartphones, police have appealed to the people to only keep GPS and location services switched on when required.

People have also been advised to maintain strict WhatsApp group privacy settings, to avoid unknown video calls and screen-sharing requests, to turn off bluetooth, NFC and hotspot services after use and to install applications only from Google Play Store or other trusted sources.

People have also been advised to adopt essential digital security practices, including enabling two-step verification on WhatsApp, Gmail, social media and banking applications; regularly checking linked devices and never sharing OTPs, UPI PINs, passwords, ATM PINs or CVV numbers with anyone.
