Secretary of the Una Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Anju Bala said the procurement would continue till June 15. She said during the last Rabi season, 127.23 metric tonnes of wheat was procured at the Rampur centre, while 30 metric tonnes was procured at the Takarla centre.

Bala said that the department had set a target of 150 metric tonnes at Rampur and 50 metric tonnes at Takarla this year. She said the department had provided grading machines at both the centres. Besides, she said proper seating arrangements and drinking water had also been provided.

Farmer Hardyal Singh, who had come to sell his produce at Rampur, said procurement by government agencies was more suitable for farmers as compared to private players because the latter imposed hidden cuts, citing increased moisture content in grains, discolouring or shrinkage. The Agriculture Department was fair to the farmers, he added.

Another farmer, Gurcharan Singh, said payment was credited to their bank accounts by the Agriculture Department within 2-4 days, while Darshan Singh said farmers were getting a proper place to rest and wait for their turn at the government’s centres.
