The situation escalated as the driver of the Punjab vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Mandeep from Khanna in Ludhiana district, along with his companions Pradeep Singh, Preetpal Singh and Jashanpreet, allegedly brandished swords and attacked Moti Ram and Yadav Dev, causing them injuries.
Videos of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage among the residents of the Sainj valley. Hundreds of villagers gathered at the Sainj police station late in the night, demanding strict action against the accused. Locals raised serious questions about the police conduct, alleging that they were lenient with the unruly tourists and did not get their proper medical examination done to determine whether they were under the influence of drugs.
The police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to assault with deadly weapons. Weapons were recovered from the scene of the incident. However, the accused were released on bail, further fueling local anger.
Kullu SP Madan Lal Kaushal denied the allegations of police inaction and stated that all four persons were taken into custody immediately after the incident and booked under various sections of the BNS pertaining to rash driving, causing hurt and assault. He claimed that the weapons used in the attack were seized and the medical examination of the accused conducted.
The SP added that charges related to obstructing a public servant in the discharge of government duties, action had been initiated against blogger Sanjay Chauhan and the former vice-presidents of Dushahad panchayat. Besides, court necessary permission was being sought to prepare the chargesheet.
