Admissions surge at Nagrota Bagwan govt school

The school currently has a strength of 483 students, with 110 fresh admissions this academic session—nearly double last year’s figure of 59. Notably, a majority of the new entrants have shifted from private schools, signalling renewed parental confidence in the institution. Even government employees, including those from the education sector, are enrolling their children here, a development rarely seen in public schooling.

Academically, the school has maintained a 100 per cent pass rate in board examinations. As many as 55 Class XII students and 33 Class X students secured merit certificates. The school has also ensured that all students score above 60 per cent, reflecting its sustained academic focus.

School authorities attribute the success to progressive teaching practices, including the ‘Teach Less, Learn More’ approach, structured lesson planning and continuous performance monitoring. These strategies, they say, have significantly improved learning outcomes.

Beyond academics, the school has introduced several initiatives to support overall development. Its multilingual morning assembly—conducted in English, Hindi and Sanskrit—encourages student participation and builds confidence and leadership skills.

Infrastructure improvements have further enhanced the school’s appeal. The campus now features Wi-Fi-enabled smart classrooms and a digital library linked to national learning platforms. Students are also provided guidance for competitive examinations such as NEET and JEE.

Principal Nikhil Sharma told The Tribune that the institution’s consistent performance across academic and co-curricular areas had contributed to the surge in admissions. “The school has maintained high standards in all spheres, which is now reflected in increased enrolment,” he said, adding, “Formerly an all-girls institution, GSSS, Nagrota Bagwan, has become co-educational from this session. It follows the Himachal Pradesh Board syllabus, and under recent reforms, both CBSE and HP Board streams have been introduced in key townships to strengthen government schools across the region.”
