Many families have been waiting for the supply of LPG cylinders for the past three months. To obtain a cylinder, people keep standing for hours on roadside. Local residents said that repeated attempts to contact the local gas agency failed, with their phone calls either going unanswered.
As Bir is a well-known tourist destination with many homestays, hotels and restaurants, the gas shortage is directly affecting tourism-related businesses. Commercial establishments depend heavily on regular gas supply.
There is also a shortage of LPG supply in Palampur city. A large crowd can be seen outside the offices of the gas dealerships at the SSB Chowk and near the new bus stand. There is a backlog of over 4,000 LPG cylinders in both agencies. The gas dealerships admitted that they were not receiving LPG supply according to demand.
