English Summary

The incidents, reported from Thural, Gopalpur, Bir and the Baglamukhi Temple area, have sparked debate over public safety and the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond promptly to emergencies during the peak tourist season. The first incident was reported from Thural, where staff members of a Volvo bus travelling from Baijnath to Delhi were allegedly assaulted by a group of tourists from Punjab following a roadside altercation. The case prompted protests from transport operators, who demanded strict action against those responsible. The police have registered a case and arrested three persons, who remain in judicial custody. In another incident reported from Gopalpur, a local tea stall owner, Kartar Chand, was allegedly assaulted by tourists from Uttar Pradesh.

Local residents alleged that although a complaint was lodged, the matter was later settled through a compromise between the parties.

Zila Parishad member Navi Thakur claimed that she accompanied the victims to the Palampur police station but was asked to leave the premises. On Thursday night, a dispute over vehicle parking at Parking No. 1 near the Baglamukhi Temple reportedly escalated into a scuffle between two groups. According to those involved, the police were informed repeatedly but allegedly expressed their inability to reach the spot immediately, citing a shortage of manpower and the non-availability of vehicles.

The complainants alleged that police reached the scene nearly one-and-a-half hours later, following the intervention of the Inspector General of Police in Shimla. In a separate case reported earlier this week, tourists allegedly assaulted a local shopkeeper in Bir after an argument.

The incident further heightened concerns among residents in tourist destinations experiencing a heavy influx of visitors during weekends and the summer holiday season.Residents alleged that complaints related to such incidents often do not receive prompt attention. They claimed that shortages of police personnel and vehicles have affected the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond quickly to emergencies in certain areas.Local residents and traders warned that the increasing number of altercations on roads and at tourist destinations could undermine the sense of security among both residents and visitors. They have urged the authorities to strengthen policing at vulnerable locations and ensure strict action against those found violating the law.Among the measures suggested by residents are increased highway patrolling, installation of surveillance cameras at strategic locations, and the deployment of additional police personnel at police stations and check posts during weekends and peak tourist periods. With several such incidents reported within a short span, residents have urged the district administration and police authorities to take preventive measures to maintain public order and ensure the safety of commuters, traders and tourists across Kangra district. The Baisakhi Sale Plan offers an excellent value of 2 years of subscription + 6 months complimentary. If you proceed with this purchase, your current monthly subscription plan will be immediately cancelled.
