Punjab youth dies after rescuing two from Beas

The deceased has been identified as Sumit, son of Ravi, a resident of Kala Singha Tratak village in Kapurthala district, Punjab. According to reports, Sumit was engaged in the garment trade in Bhuntar and lived in rented accommodation. Three of his friends, also from the Kapurthala region, are reportedly involved in the same business.

The incident occurred on Friday evening when a migrant worker from another state suddenly jumped into the Beas River near the old Bhuntar bridge. Witnessing the man struggling in the water, two individuals, including Sumit, immediately entered the river in an attempt to save him, without regard for their own safety.

During the rescue operation, Sumit played a crucial role in saving two people who had become trapped in the river. However, after ensuring their safety, he himself was caught in the powerful current and swept away. Despite frantic efforts by local residents and rescue teams, he could not be located on Friday evening.

A search operation continued along the riverbank late into the night, but no trace of the missing youth was found. On Saturday morning, personnel from the Bhuntar police, assisted by local residents, resumed the search and eventually recovered Sumit’s body from the river.

The police took custody of the body and completed the necessary legal formalities before sending it to the Regional Hospital in Kullu for a post-mortem examination. Following the procedure, the body was handed over to his family.

The incident has left the local community in mourning, with many paying tribute to Sumit’s courage and sacrifice. His heroic actions saved two lives and have made him a symbol of humanity and selfless service.

Confirming the development, Kullu Superintendent of Police Madan Lal Kaushal said that the body was recovered on Saturday morning and all required legal procedures had been completed.

The tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed by fast-flowing mountain rivers, while also highlighting the extraordinary courage of those who risk their lives to save others.
