The highway was closed on Thursday evening following a heavy rainfall in the Bharmour region, which triggered a landslide and brought large boulders crashing onto the road. While the NH authorities managed to reopen the route for small vehicles the same evening, massive rocks scattered across the road prevented the movement of buses, pickup vehicles and other heavy vehicles.
Vehicles carrying construction material and essential goods were stranded overnight due to the closure of the road. Several commuters, including students and employees, crossed the landslide-hit stretch on foot and hired taxis or other vehicles from the opposite side to reach their destinations in time.
The road closure also delayed the supply of essential commodities to the remote Bharmour region. Vehicles carrying vegetables, milk, bread, eggs and other daily necessities remained stuck until the road was reopened.
The NH authorities carried out blasting operations on Friday morning to break the large boulders before deploying machinery to clear the debris.
Executive Engineer, National Highways Division Chamba, Joginder Sharma said the highway is now open to all vehicles.
