As against the daily requirement of 80 lakh litres, the supply to the city declined to 46.49 lakh litres today.
Pertinently, a massive religious congregation of the Radha Soami Satsang Beas is scheduled in the coming days. Besides the Shoolini festival is set to take place on June 26, 27 and 28. During the events, Solan’s population effectively doubles every year as a large number of devotees, tourists and guests throng the city.
Shailendra Gupta, president, BJP’s Solan Urban Mandal, in a representation to the DC, said water crisis could escalate if the Jal Shakti Department (JSD) fails to take effective steps to improve water availability to the city.
“Since past week, there has been an acute shortage of drinking water across various areas of the city. The situation is so perilous that residents are receiving water once every five or six days. The public is facing immense hardship in the scorching heat,” Gupta added.
“In view of the present scenario, the JSD should take immediate, effective and concrete measures to resolve the issue of water scarcity in the city. This is essential to provide relief to the residents and to prevent any disorder or mismanagement during the upcoming religious and cultural events,” he added.
Gupta alleged that the JSD had failed to ensure regular monitoring of water availability by an officer of the assistant engineer-level, who should detect and rectify technical faults or disruptions.
He demanded immediate intervention of the DC to ensure smooth water supply to the residents.
Pertinently, water supply has been severally hit this summer in Solan city. As per the figures secured from the JSD, barely 46.49 lakh litres of water was supplied today from the twin water schemes of Giri and Ashwani, while it was 64.36 lakh litres yesterday and 70.59 lakh litres on June 3.
There has been a sharp decline in the supply since June 1 when the total water received by Solan city declined to 63.33 lakh litres from 75.90 lakh litres on May 31. The supply was further reduced to 53.61 lakh litres on June 2.
