Civic poll results: Sukhu’s ‘one-day value’ remark triggers political storm

Responding to the BJP’s claims of victory, the Chief Minister said Congress-backed candidates had won around 2,400 pradhan and 2,300 vice-pradhan posts across the state. “The real value is of pradhans and vice-pradhans. ZP and BDC members have value for just one day,” he remarked, while dismissing the BJP’s narrative of electoral success.

He later clarified that he meant no disrespect to ZP and Panchayat Samiti members. He said his remarks referred only to the voting role of ZP and BDC members in the election of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons, adding that they continue to play an important role in development works and receive adequate funds for their respective areas. Sukhu accused the BJP of making false and exaggerated claims regarding its performance.

Sukhu accused the BJP of making false and exaggerated claims regarding its performance. He pointed out that the BJP had officially fielded candidates in the Zila Parishad elections, whereas the Congress had not announced any official nominees. Despite this, he said, the BJP managed to win only about 100 of the 251 ZP wards.

The Chief Minister also claimed that the BJP was overstating its success in urban local body elections by highlighting isolated victories. He said elections were held in 53 urban local bodies, including four Municipal Corporations and the Congress had secured victories in 29 while the BJP won in 21.

Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur hit back at the Chief Minister, alleging that the remarks reflected frustration. He said elected representatives chosen by thousands of voters deserved respect and demanded that Sukhu apologise for what he termed derogatory comments against public representatives.
