The enforcement team inspected shops, commercial establishments, and public spaces in Depot Bazar, Civil Lines, College Road, Jawahar Nagar, and Cheliyan, near the HPCA Stadium. Officials penalised offenders for breaches under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the Himachal Pradesh Prohibition of Sale of Loose Cigarettes and Beedies Act, 2016.
Violations included smoking in public places, selling loose cigarettes, and failing to display mandatory signage prohibiting tobacco sales to minors.
Led by District Nodal Officer Dr Anuradha, the team included Drug Inspector Meenakshi, Sub-Inspector Sunil Patial (STF), ASI Indu Bala (Police Department), Head Constable Vipin (STF), and Woman Constable Kanak Mala (STF, North Range). Officials stated the drive is part of the administration’s ongoing campaign to enforce tobacco laws and raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse.
During the drive, officials emphasised that tobacco remains a leading preventable cause of disease and premature death worldwide, linked to cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses and tuberculosis.
They further warned that tobacco often acts as a gateway to stronger addictions, including synthetic drugs like chitta. The team stressed on the need for collective action among government agencies, educational institutions, civil society and the public to protect youth from addiction.
