Pain of progress: Nurpur residents up in arms against unsafe blasting for four-lane project

The affected residents of Vayees Meel village near Khazian in the Nurpur Assembly constituency submitted a memorandum to the district administration, claiming that high-intensity explosives were being used to remove remnants of an old bridge along the highway project without adequate safeguards.

In their complaint, residents, including Gurnam Singh, Anita Devi, Parmanand, Arjun Singh, Shakuntla, Sant Ram, Hemant, Makhan Deen and Vijay Kumar, alleged that a powerful blast was carried out around noon on May 24

According to the complainants, the explosion triggered panic in the village, with several houses experiencing tremors and shocks. They alleged that the incident has left residents fearful about the safety of their homes.

The families have urged the district administration to ensure that only approved explosives are used for blasting operations and that such activities are undertaken only after obtaining mandatory permissions and providing advance notice to nearby residents.

The residents have also raised concerns over what they described as large-scale unscientific hill cutting near the inhabited area. They fear the excavation could increase the risk of landslides during the forthcoming monsoon season and endanger lives and property.

Local social activist Narinder Singh alleged that villagers had been raising concerns over vertical and unscientific hill cutting for the past four years but claimed that the issue had not received adequate attention from authorities.

He warned that if the alleged unsafe blasting and hill-cutting activities continued, the affected families would consider lodging an FIR against the construction company. He also demanded adequate protective measures to safeguard houses in the area before the onset of the monsoon.

Responding to the allegations, Harpreet Singh, Chief General Manager of IRB Construction Company, said all legal norms and prescribed safety standards were being followed during blasting operations. He denied that the activities posed any threat to nearby houses and maintained that the work was being carried out in accordance with approved procedures.
