Topping the new administration’s agenda will be widespread allegations of irregularities in development projects executed by the previous regime — including missing files from the MC office — and chronic delays in clearing local residents’ building plans.
The controversial “toilet scam” and “solar light scam” dominated the recent civic body elections, with opposition leaders and residents heavily questioning how public funds were utilised.
According to local residents and civic activists, over Rs 4 crore was spent to construct around 30 public toilet complexes across the PMC jurisdiction. Despite the massive expenditure, not a single facility is functional. Instead, toilets are locked, abandoned or incomplete, lacking basic water and electricity connections. Activists are now demanding a thorough investigation into the project’s planning and execution, alleging blatant wastage and sub-standard construction.
Similarly, the town’s solar street light scheme has drawn severe criticism. Local sources claim nearly 60% of the solar lights stopped working within two years of installation, plunging several neighbourhoods into darkness and compromising resident safety.
Public anger has been further fuelled by the total absence of accountability. Despite repeated outcries, no official or contractor has been held responsible, and contractors have reportedly already pocketed their final payments for both projects.
Local Congress MLA Ashish Butail has maintained that these irregularities occurred during the BJP-led municipal administration prior to 2022. He has repeatedly urged the state government to launch a formal inquiry and penalise those responsible.
With expectations running high, the incoming PMC faces immediate pressure to deliver transparency, fix crumbling civic services and restore broken public trust.
