Man booked for attacking truck driver in Manali road rage case

The accused, identified as Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Rangri village near Manali, is currently absconding. Police have launched a search operation to trace and arrest him.

According to the complaint lodged at Manali police station on May 29, complainant Prem Chand, a resident of Gahar village in Seobagh, was driving a truck (HP-34E-8542) from Kullu to Leh carrying a consignment of tiles. He was accompanied by conductor Thakur Das.

Police said around 6 pm, when the truck reached near Hotel Neelam at Rangri, the driver of a Hyundai Venue (HP-58A-9691), later identified as Sanjay Kumar, overtook the vehicle and allegedly stopped his car abruptly in front of the truck, blocking its path.

The accused then reportedly began abusing the truck driver and engaging in a heated argument. According to the police investigation, he attempted to open the truck’s window before allegedly retrieving a sickle from his vehicle and using it to smash the driver-side window of the truck.

After breaking the glass, the accused allegedly removed the truck’s ignition key and fled from the spot.

Prem Chand and conductor Thakur Das escaped unhurt in the incident. Two eyewitnesses, identified as Suresh Kumar and Rakesh Kumar, have reportedly corroborated the sequence of events.

Based on the complaint, eyewitness accounts and the viral video footage, police have registered an FIR against the accused under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 324(2) (mischief causing damage to property) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Police officials said efforts were underway to apprehend the accused. Authorities are examining all available evidence, including the viral video, and pursuing multiple leads in the case.
