Police recovered 871 bottles of liquor of different brands from a pick-up vehicle. The seized stock included 43 cartons of country liquor, 20 cartons of beer, two cartons of whisky and three cartons of rum.
Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani said a patrol team from the Tissa police station was on routine night patrol in the area in view of the upcoming panchayat elections and heightened security arrangements. During the patrol, the police received specific information from a local resident, Mausam Deen, that a vehicle carrying illegal liquor had moved from Jhajjakothi towards Laghen Sanwal.
Acting on the tip-off, the police intercepted the vehicle and began chasing it. However, the driver allegedly sped away after noticing the police presence. The vehicle was later found abandoned at Jhajjakothi. During checking, the police discovered a large liquor consignment loaded inside the vehicle.
The driver, identified as Jagdish Kumar, a resident of Nal village in Tissa tehsil, failed to produce valid documents related to the liquor consignment during questioning.
A case under the Excise Act has been registered at the Tissa police station and both the liquor consignment and the vehicle have been seized.
The SP said preliminary inquiry indicated that the liquor was allegedly being smuggled into the Sanwal area in view of the panchayat elections.
Further investigation is underway to trace others involved in the illegal liquor trade, he added.
Saklani said the police had intensified patrolling and vehicle checking across the district ahead of the Panchayat elections to curb illegal activities, including liquor smuggling and drug trafficking.
