According to officials, the deceased have been identified as Amra Devi, 52, a head teacher posted at Bhalona school; her daughter Aradhya, 14; Priyanka (14) of Uncha Tikkar; and Sajjan Singh (62) of Kajwa in Sangrah tehsil. All four died on the spot due to the impact of the crash.
Amra Devi’s son sustained serious injuries and was referred to Dr YS Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan, where his condition was stated to be critical. The family belongs to Gattadhar panchayat in Sangrah subdivision.
Officials said Amra Devi was on her way to school along with her children when the vehicle lost control and fell into the gorge. Soon after the accident, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Sunil Kayath and a police team reached the spot and launched rescue operations.
Initial findings suggest that the poor condition of the road may have contributed to the accident. The Piulani-Bhalona road, along with other link roads such as Sangrah-Gattadhar, is in a severely damaged condition, with large potholes and sinking stretches posing a risk to commuters, especially ahead of the monsoon.
Local residents said they had repeatedly raised the issue, but repair work had not been carried out despite several demands. The latest accident has intensified calls for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life.
A police official said a probe was underway to ascertain the exact cause of the accident.
