Key Facts
Heavy rains lashed multiple districts of West Bengal on Friday, June 19, 2026, causing one fatality in Alipurduar, washing away a major bridge in north Bengal, and leading to severe waterlogging in Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for north Bengal and orange/yellow alerts for Kolkata and south Bengal, with rains expected to continue till June 23.
Bridge Washed Away in North Bengal
A cardinal bridge between Mirik and Darjeeling was washed away due to heavy rain and flooding. Additionally, a temporary hume pipe bridge at Dudhia on the Balasan River—constructed just 7-8 months ago after the original bridge was damaged in October 2025—was also washed away. Public Works Department Minister Adhikari stated, “Major damage was where a bridge was washed out... a similar incident happened in 2025 in Dudhia... rains can damage bridges because of the heavy force of the gushing water from the mountains, there is massive water pressure. But a bridge that was constructed 7-8 months back was completely washed away... if there was any cut money or the quality was maintained during construction, we will look into it, but for now, we need to restore normalcy as our first priority.” The CM said it will take the PWD four to five days to complete diversion work, depending on weather conditions.
Casualty and Compensation
One death of a 4-year-old child was reported from a tea estate in Alipurduar. The government announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the victim’s family.
Teesta River and Landslides
The Teesta River is running slightly above danger level in Cooch Behar district. Landslides were reported on National Highway 10 but were cleared within a few hours. Authorities have cleared debris from most landslides.
Kolkata Waterlogging
Kolkata and its surrounding areas, including C.R. Avenue, Behala, Ballygunge, Salt Lake, Sector V, and Dum Dum, suffered severe waterlogging. The rains started early Friday, disrupting normal life—schools shut down, traffic slowed, and commuters faced massive difficulties. Waterlogging was also reported inside Alipur Zoo and R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital premises. Minister Agnimitra Paul visited the affected areas. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation activated its control room to manage the situation.
