Key Facts
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) stated that the National Conference (NC) will not support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on its pending Bills in Parliament. He said that while other parties like the DMK and Shiv Sena may decide based on their conscience, the NC remains firm in its ideological commitment.
Omar Abdullah's Stance
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Abdullah said, “I cannot predict from a distance what will happen. It is up to the conscience of these MPs how far they want to go. Our party will not support them.” He emphasized that the NC is guided by a set of values and will not compromise its principles for political gain. “We remain committed to our political ideology and will not alter our stand for the sake of power. Every party is free to make its own decisions, but the NC’s position is clear. We are guided by a set of values. Those principles are not for sale,” he added.
NC's Focus on Commitments
The Chief Minister reiterated that his party is focused on fulfilling promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, rather than seeking political advantage through shifting alliances. “We are not securing political advantage through shifting alliances,” he said.
Planned Protest by NC
In a separate event in the Valley, NC MP Mian Altaf announced that the party plans to hold a protest in New Delhi on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. “It [protest] will be held at the scheduled time. It is our duty,” said Mr. Altaf.
BJP's Response
Senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in J&K, Sunil Sharma, countered by attributing the region's past bloodshed to regional parties. “J&K saw bloodshed, bullets and burning of schools when regional parties functioned under Statehood. They used the Public Safety Act [PSA] and other stringent laws to suppress people. The bloodshed ended after J&K was made a Union Territory and the Ministry of Home Affairs took control of law and order,” he said in Srinagar.
Mr. Sharma also highlighted the return of Kashmiri Pandits, calling them the “identity of Kashmir.” He stated, “The government has created an environment where displaced Kashmiri Pandits can return and claim their property.”
