Key Facts

In a dramatic turn of events, a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) who had earlier approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) alleging corruption by Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials has himself been caught in a bribery case in Nagpur. The ACB arrested Sajan Shaligramji Shende (50), posted at Nagpur RTO, and his alleged accomplice Praveen Baburao Gaidhane (50) for demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹500 at the Khursapar border check post.

Details of the Case

On March 30, a delegation of 20 MVIs, including Shende, submitted a memorandum to the ACB office in Nagpur alleging corruption within the RTO by a section of officers. However, during an investigation triggered by a separate complaint, the ACB found Shende himself allegedly involved in corrupt practices at the Khursapar check post.

A truck owner approached the ACB on June 10, alleging that officials and private persons at the Khursapar RTO check post had taken a bribe of ₹500 for allowing his vehicle to pass. Fearing another demand, he lodged a formal complaint. During the ACB inquiry on June 11, 2026, it was found that Gaidhane demanded ₹500 from the complainant for clearing the truck's entry. Shende was present on duty at the time.

The ACB stated, “Gaidhane accepted a bribe of ₹500 for passing a truck through the RTO check post. The acceptance was encouraged by Motor Vehicle Inspector Sajan Shaligramji Shende.” The anti-graft sleuths also recovered ₹47,000 in cash from the check post. Both accused were taken into custody and booked under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act (POCA).

Impact and What Readers Should Know

This case highlights the pervasive corruption in transport departments and the irony of an official complaining about corruption while being involved in it. The ACB's swift action demonstrates its commitment to rooting out corruption, even among those who pose as whistleblowers. Citizens are encouraged to report any such incidents to the ACB.
