Key Facts

In a decisive move against habitual offenders, the Mysuru City police on Friday detained a 28-year-old rowdy sheeter, identified as Kaushik, under the Goonda Act. Kaushik, a resident of Janata Street in Koorgalli, was lodged in the Central Prison at Kalaburgi. The police have warned that similar stringent action will be taken against other active rowdy elements in the city.

Details of the Detention

Kaushik has a criminal record of nine cases registered against him across multiple police stations. These include five cases at Vijayanagar Police Station, two at H.D. Kote Police Station, one at Channapatna Rural Police Station, and one at Ilavala Police Station. The charges against him are serious, including attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, dacoity, assault with deadly weapons, and criminal intimidation.

Despite having a rowdy sheet opened against him at Vijayanagar Police Station and local legal measures taken, Kaushik continued his criminal activities. The City Police Commissioner ordered his detention under the Goonda Act to curb his conduct effectively.

Formation of Anti-Rowdy Squads

Following the city police's initiative to set up anti-rowdy squads at police station levels, the Mysuru district police announced the formation of similar squads at Circle and Police Station levels. A total of 17 anti-rowdy squads have been established: 4 at the police circle level and 13 at the police station level.

Police Circle Inspectors will head the circle-level squads, while Police Inspectors will lead the station-level squads. Each squad comprises five police officers and personnel. The squads will be supervised by the respective jurisdictional Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs).

Objectives and Functions

The primary objective of these squads is to monitor the activities of rowdy elements, reform them, steer them away from criminal activities, and bring them into the mainstream of society. The police will review the criminal history of individuals and open rowdy sheets against habitual offenders.

The squads will monitor active rowdies and their associates, prevent their involvement in rowdyism and other crimes, and keep a watch on rowdy elements in prisons and those released. They will periodically summon known rowdies, counsel and warn them, and obtain good conduct bonds.

Public Appeal

The police have urged the public to report any incidents of rowdyism, extortion, intimidation, or related unlawful activities by calling the 112 Emergency Response Support System or informing the nearest police station.
