Key Facts: Widespread Heavy Rainfall Across India

Heavy to very heavy rainfall lashed several parts of India on July 6, 2026, affecting Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, and Himachal Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for multiple districts. In Maharashtra, the State Disaster Management Authority advised private offices in Mumbai to allow work from home and declared a half-day for non-essential government offices. The monsoon session of the Maharashtra Legislature was disrupted, with flights cancelled and trains suspended.

Maharashtra: Landslides, Flight Cancellations, and Casualties

In Pune district, a landslide at Patan village in Maval tehsil buried a house, killing one person and leaving two missing. An NDRF official confirmed, “The body of one person has been recovered from the debris, and the search is underway for the other two.” A 30-member NDRF team was deployed for rescue operations.

Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar and Raigad districts recorded record-breaking rainfall. Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan stated that 13 people died in rain-related incidents in the last three to four days. In Thane city, 186 emergency complaints were reported, including 110 tree collapses and two compound wall collapses. A fireman sustained severe leg injuries while clearing a fallen tree.

Air travel was severely impacted. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule and several MLAs from Nagpur were stranded at Mumbai airport after their IndiGo flight was cancelled. BJP MLA Sameer Meghe noted that his 10:10 a.m. flight never departed. Congress MLA Vikas Thakre expressed frustration over uncertain schedules.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old highway were closed due to flooding and landslides. The Patalganga river breached its mark, flooding a section near Khalapur. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed disruptions on the Mumbai-Pune Ghat route and directed early restoration.

Isolated parts of Rajasthan received heavy to very heavy rainfall in the 24 hours ending July 6. Shrimadhopur in Sikar district recorded the highest rainfall of 75 mm. Jaipur received 40 mm, while moderate to heavy rain fell in Udaipur, Jhalawar, Baran, and Sirohi. The IMD predicted active monsoon over Jaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, Udaipur, and Ajmer divisions for the next five to seven days, with very heavy rain expected in southeastern Rajasthan from July 6 to 9.

Schools and colleges were closed in Cuttack, Kandhamal, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Bargarh districts.

Himachal Pradesh: Floods Block Roads in Chamba and Kullu

Moderate to heavy rains lashed Himachal Pradesh overnight, triggering flash floods and blocking key roads in Chamba and Kullu districts. The Chamba-Tissa road was blocked due to a flash flood at Pangola Nala in Churah subdivision. Traffic was disrupted at Pagal Nala on the Larji-Sainj road in Kullu. Jogindernagar in Mandi district recorded the highest rainfall of 97 mm, followed by Kangra (74.8 mm), Palampur (35.4 mm), and Dharamshala (27.2 mm).
