Key Facts

Pierre Coffin, the director and voice of the Minions, has opened up about his solo directorial debut 'Minions & Monsters', which premiered at the Annecy animation festival on June 20, 2026. The film is a tribute to Hollywood's Golden Age and marks the first time Coffin was allowed to fully write and direct his own vision within the franchise.

Details: A Personal Project

Coffin had previously told Illumination founder Chris Meledandri he wanted to stop making Minions films after 'Despicable Me 3', citing the exhausting workload. However, when Meledandri pitched an idea about a Minion making a monster movie, Coffin became fixated on the word 'movie' and envisioned a 1920s setting. 'If we were telling a story about Minions making movies, it made sense to place it at the dawn of cinema as we know it,' Coffin said.

The film follows James, an imaginative Minion, and his friends Henry and Ed, under the eye of Max, a director inspired by European filmmakers like Fritz Lang and Ernst Lubitsch. Coffin drew from his own childhood memories of silent comedies and his first movie experience watching 'Star Wars' in Detroit.

Impact: A More Irreverent Comedy

Coffin aimed to create a film that works on multiple levels for children and adults, with background gags and references to classic horror movies. He noted that the Minions' physical comedy is heir to silent-film stars, making the humor universal. 'I tend to lean more toward adults, my producer pulls more toward children, and somewhere in the middle we find the balance. That’s probably what makes the films a little more irreverent than some of the competition,' he said.

What Readers Should Know

  • The film is Coffin's solo directorial debut and the first he co-wrote with Bryan Lynch.
  • It pays homage to Hollywood's immigrant founders and silent film era.
  • Coffin continues to voice all Minions, a demanding task that requires redoing voices if scripts change.
  • There are no plans for an R-rated Minions film, as Coffin sees them as childlike.
