The Ministry of Defence on Saturday announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires on June 30, 2026. Lt Gen Seth, currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, will hold the rank of General and serve until August 31, 2028.

Lt Gen Seth is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Over a career spanning more than 40 years, he has commanded at every level in diverse operational environments. He has the rare distinction of leading two operational Army Commands — the South Western Command and Southern Command — for over two-and-a-half years.

His command experience includes an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a Counter Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir. He also commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, a premier strike formation. Additionally, he served as General Officer Commanding of Delhi Area, overseeing key national and international military engagements.

Lt Gen Seth has held pivotal appointments in the Strategic Planning and Capability Development verticals of Army Headquarters. According to the PIB defence wing, he has shaped the Army's modernisation trajectory, capability roadmap, and long-term force structuring initiatives. He has also excelled in professional military education, securing top positions in courses. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, and attended the Command and Staff Course in Paris.
