Leopard Attack in Seraj: 26 Goats Killed

A leopard entered a livestock shed in Shikawari panchayat under Seraj subdivision of Mandi district late Friday night, killing 26 goats and causing severe financial loss to the owner. The incident has spread fear among villagers, who suspect the presence of more than one leopard in the area.

Details of the Incident

The leopard targeted the shed of Krishna Lal, a resident of Gram Panchayat Shikawari. When Krishna Lal went to check on his goats on Saturday morning, he found mutilated carcasses scattered inside the shed and nearby forest. Some goats were dragged into the jungle by the predator. Only four goats survived the attack.

According to preliminary estimates, the family has suffered a loss of approximately Rs 5 lakh. The goats were their primary source of livelihood.

Villagers Express Fear

Local residents including Sohan Lal, Nirmal Singh, and Leela Ram expressed concern over the incident. They believe that the scale of the attack indicates the presence of multiple leopards in the region. The attack has heightened worries about the safety of children and domestic animals.

Panchayat Demands Action

Gram Panchayat Shikawari Pradhan Radha Devi and Up-Pradhan Pushpa Raj visited the spot and assessed the damage. They have urged the administration and Forest Department to provide immediate relief and adequate compensation to the affected family. They also demanded increased patrolling, installation of cages to monitor the leopard, and effective measures to ensure villagers' safety.
