Key Facts
Kozhikode district in Kerala has reported a fresh case of Nipah virus infection, prompting immediate containment measures by the district administration. The patient, a businessman, is currently on ventilator support at the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) in Kozhikode. This marks the fourth occurrence of the deadly zoonotic disease in the district since the first outbreak in 2018.
Details of the Case
District Collector M.S. Madhavikutty informed the media that the patient is being treated in the ICU and is on ventilator support. An isolation ward has been set up at the MCH. As part of contact tracing, 77 individuals have been identified as contacts of the patient.
The infected person, a businessman, had reportedly cleaned a godown he had taken on rent in May. Health officials suspect he may have come into contact with bat excreta during the cleaning process. Another possibility is that he consumed fruits from a sapota tree on his residential premises. He initially sought treatment at a private hospital but his condition did not improve. He was later admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode city earlier this week. After doctors suspected Nipah infection, body fluid samples were sent for lab tests. The patient was shifted to the isolation ward at Kozhikode MCH on the night of June 10, 2026. Initial tests at the medical college lab were positive, and samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for confirmation.
Containment Measures
Surveillance and containment steps have been initiated in Ramanattukara municipality. A meeting of the rapid response team was convened. Arrangements have been made to provide personal protection equipment (PPE), gloves, and face masks. Medicines have also been kept ready. The district administration is working under the 'One Health' approach, coordinating with the Health, Animal Husbandry, and Forest and Wildlife departments.
District Collector Madhavikutty stated, “The Forest department has been asked to find out if there had been any mass deaths of bats in roosting sites. The Animal Husbandry department has been asked to see if infections had been reported in animals.”
