Key Facts

In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Himachal Pradesh, a court in Kangra has sentenced two individuals, including a woman, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for possession of 2 kg 9 grams of charas. The incident dates back to October 29, 2022, when the Narcotics Task Force and Field Unit intercepted a car near Radha Swami Satsang Parour in Palampur subdivision.

Details of the Case

The convicts have been identified as Bimala Devi, a resident of Bhuntar in Kullu district, and Pawan Kumar, a resident of Khani in Mandi district. They were caught red-handed with the contraband and drug money amounting to Rs 80,000. The court of Special Judge Sheetal Sharma pronounced the verdict on July 8, 2026, holding them guilty under Sections 20 and 29 of the NDPS Act.

Arrest and Recovery

Acting on a tip-off, the police team reached the spot where an unnumbered car was parked in a forest area near the link road. The accused were found sitting inside the car. During the search, four packets containing charas were recovered from a yellow bag kept under Bimala Devi's seat. The total weight of the charas was 2 kg 9 grams. Additionally, Rs 80,000 in cash, suspected to be drug money, was seized.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

The court considered the evidence, including police testimony, seizure procedure, and forensic reports, as credible. During the sentencing hearing, the accused pleaded for leniency, claiming to be the sole breadwinners of their families. However, Public Prosecutor Vivek Dogra informed the court that both accused had prior criminal records under the NDPS Act. The court termed the crime as serious against society and awarded strict punishment.

The sentence includes 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. In case of default in payment of the fine, the convicts will have to undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.
