Key Facts

India has been placed on the highest alert following the killing of three Indian seafarers in a US military strike near the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways confirmed on Thursday that the government is closely monitoring developments in the Gulf of Oman and adjoining areas to ensure the safety of Indian sailors.

The three deceased have been identified as Patnala Suresh (44), Aditya Sharma (23), and Shivanand Chaurasia (38). They were aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello when it was attacked by a US jet amid ongoing hostilities between the US and Iran.

Details of the Incident

According to official statements, the MT Settebello was one of three vessels carrying Indian crew members that came under attack in the Gulf of Oman. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) alleged that the vessel was attempting to breach a naval blockade by heading to an Iranian port. Following the attack, the three Indian sailors were reported missing and later confirmed dead.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed condolences, stating, "This is a profound loss to our maritime family. The Modi Govt stands firmly with the bereaved during this difficult hour and is fully committed to supporting the next of kin." Among the deceased, one was a marine engineer from Visakhapatnam, another an engine fitter from Uttar Pradesh, and the third a deck cadet under training from Himachal Pradesh.

Government Response and Alert Status

The Indian government has directed all concerned agencies to remain on "heightened alert" and "maintain readiness to respond to any contingency involving Indian seafarers or Indian maritime interests." Dedicated communication channels have been established for round-the-clock security of sailors. Vessel operators, ship managers, and shipping companies have been instructed to adhere strictly to maritime protocols and ensure crew safety.

In addition, seafarers transiting through the region on Indian or foreign-flagged vessels have been advised to exercise extreme caution. The government is coordinating with maritime administrations of friendly countries and shipping companies to provide support.

Impact on Maritime Trade

The attacks have raised serious concerns about the security of commercial shipping in the region. Besides the MT Settebello, two other vessels with Indian crew were targeted. The Palau-flagged Marivex, an unladen oil tanker, was hit but all 24 Indian crew members were rescued. The Guinea Bissau-flagged Jalveer, which typically transports freight from the UAE to India, was also struck; all 20 Indian nationals aboard were reported safe.

US President Donald Trump commented on the strikes, saying, "We've been taking out many ships that nobody knew... over the last month, we've been taking out big ships, quietly at night... We bombed their (Iran's) radar and everything so they couldn't see what was going on." According to US CENTCOM, since the naval blockade was imposed in April, nine non-compliant vessels have been disabled, 135 ships have been redirected, and 42 vessels supporting humanitarian aid have been allowed to pass.
