Key Highlights

In Lanjhta village, Ghumarwin subdivision of Bilaspur district, the HP Shiva Project is transforming the economic landscape for 54 farmers. Over 10,000 litchi plants have been planted on 13.5 hectares, and fruits are now appearing after years of effort. Modern techniques and irrigation facilities have eased the farmers' journey.

Project Details and Expansion

The Lanjhta panchayat was selected for Front Line Demonstration (FLD) under the HP Shiva Project in 2019-20. Initially, 500 litchi plants were planted. Following success, an additional 9,505 plants were added in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Today, 54 farmers manage over 10,000 plants scientifically across 13.5 hectares. To strengthen irrigation, a 1,00,000-liter water storage tank and seven 20,000-liter tanks have been constructed. The Horticulture Department provides regular training and technical guidance.

Farmer Success Stories

Prakash Chand, a local farmer, has planted 850 litchi plants and reports that fruits are now appearing, expected to become a major income source. Lata Devi, another beneficiary, has planted 834 plants and has been getting good quality fruits since last year. She notes that commercial fruit production is empowering rural women economically.

Technical Approach and Support

Subject matter specialist Abhishek Vishisht explained that the first phase developed FLD and the second phase a PRF cluster. High-density planting is used to maximize production on limited land. The department provides regular technical assistance and training to farmers.

Impact and Future Outlook

Last year, the cluster produced 12-15 quintals of litchi, but adverse weather reduced this year's output to 4-5 quintals. Farmers are optimistic that as plants mature, production and income will rise significantly. Deputy Commissioner Bilaspur, Rahul Kumar, emphasized that effective scheme implementation, modern techniques, and farmer hard work can revitalize the rural economy. The district administration ensures timely benefits to eligible people.
