Key Facts

Director Gautam Vasudev Menon has approached the Madras High Court seeking a 30-day extension to release the long-awaited film Dhruva Natchathiram, starring 'Chiyan' Vikram. The application, filed on June 15, 2026, requests time until July 15, 2026, as Menon stated he is unable to meet the earlier deadline of June 15 despite best efforts.

Background of the Legal Dispute

The film's release has been delayed for years due to financial troubles and consequent legal battles. The dispute originated from a theatrical distribution agreement signed in March 2016 between investors K. Punniamoorthy and K. Premkumar with Madan Pandy of Escape Artists Motion Pictures for the Dhanush-starrer Enai Noki Paayum Thota. A financial disagreement led to arbitration, and a compromise was reached in March 2018 via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Under the MoU, Pandy transferred 50% of his rights in Dhruva Natchathiram to the two investors, as Pandy was a partner in Kondaduvom Entertainment along with Menon and Reshma Ghatala. In 2023, the investors filed a civil suit and obtained an interim injunction against the film's release.

Court Orders in April 2026

On April 30, 2026, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy cleared the way for the film's release on or before June 15, 2026. The judge noted that further delay would harm not only the parties but also hundreds of actors and technicians involved. He directed Menon to open a dedicated bank account in the name of Kondaduvom Entertainment for all monetary transactions related to the release. Advocates M.V. Swaroop and H.S. Hredai were appointed as observers to supervise finances. The court ordered that all payments to creditors must be made from this account, and no debits could occur without prior consent from at least one observer. Additionally, no payments could be made to partners of Kondaduvom Entertainment as remuneration or profit share without court leave.

Appeals and Extension Plea

The investors appealed the April order before a Division Bench led by Justice P. Velmurugan, which reserved its orders on June 2, 2026. Meanwhile, Menon filed the extension application before the single judge, which is expected to be heard on June 15, 2026. The Division Bench is also set to pronounce orders on the appeals the same day.
