Key Facts

Former Karnataka minister K.S. Eshwarappa on June 17 launched a sharp attack on state Home Minister Priyank Kharge for writing a letter to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, accusing Kharge of seeking publicity by targeting the organization. The exchange highlights the ongoing political friction between the BJP and Congress in Karnataka.

Eshwarappa's Criticism

Speaking to reporters, Eshwarappa questioned Kharge's authority to question the RSS. "Who is he to question the RSS? Has he contributed even a rupee to the sangha?" he asked, adding that the RSS shares its accounts only with those who deserve it. He challenged Kharge to take legal action if he had any authority as Home Minister, instead of making public statements.

Eshwarappa alleged that Kharge repeatedly invokes the RSS in his speeches across Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, and Delhi solely for publicity. "He knows that if he takes the legal route, he can’t succeed. Hence, he is talking about the sangha through the media," Eshwarappa said.

He also took strong exception to Kharge's letter, stating that Mohan Bhagwat should not have responded to it. In a personal attack, he referred to Kharge as "garbage" and said he does not deserve any response.

Defense of RSS

Defending the RSS, Eshwarappa pointed out that hundreds of trusts and organizations function under its banner and are duly registered with authorities. "They are responding to the agencies. If any authorized agency seeks information, the sangha will respond," he said.

On the issue of security provided to Bhagwat, Eshwarappa asserted that the RSS chief deserves it given the threats he faces. "Mr. Bhagwat is the head of an organization that has its members across the globe. There are terrorist activities. His life is important for the country. There is a threat to his life. If not for him, who else deserves security?" he argued.

Eshwarappa also recalled an incident in Chittapur where Kharge had allegedly refused to allow an RSS march, but the court later permitted it. "The court has understood the importance of the organization," he said.

Political Warning

Drawing historical parallels, Eshwarappa warned that Congress leaders who opposed the RSS have suffered politically. "Not only Mr. Kharge, his father, Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru suffered in their political careers because they took on the RSS. Similarly, Kharge will also vanish if he continues on this path," he said.
