Key Facts

For the past two days, the lift at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Chamba has been non-functional, causing immense hardship to patients and their attendants. The hospital, which houses over 250 patients, has seen attendants resort to using wheelchairs and stretchers to transport patients via the ramp to the third and fourth floors.

Details of the Breakdown

The lift breakdown has particularly affected pregnant women and elderly patients. On Monday morning, attendants were seen struggling to move patients up and down the ramp. Kamla Kumari, who was taking her ailing mother-in-law to the third floor, was informed that the lift was out of order and had to push the wheelchair up the ramp. Similarly, a woman who was discharged from the maternity ward had to be taken down via the ramp as the lift doors would not open.

Suresh Kumar from Saho brought his grandfather for treatment and was advised to take him to the fourth floor. He faced great difficulty due to the non-functional lift. Tek Chand from Dharwala, who suffers from joint pain, also had to use the ramp to reach the fourth floor to inquire about a relative.

Impact on Patients and Attendants

The breakdown has added to the distress of patients and their families. Attendants have expressed frustration over the lack of basic amenities in a large hospital. The ramp, while usable, is not designed for easy movement of wheelchairs and stretchers, especially for those with physical ailments.

Hospital Administration's Response

Hospital spokesperson Dr. Manik Sehgal stated that technicians have been called to repair the lift and it will be made operational soon. However, no exact timeline has been provided, leaving patients and staff in uncertainty.
